Uncanny x-force 23 by leinilyu Uncanny x-force 23 by leinilyu
x-force cover with pen and ink and copics. had fun but too a while.
seldom use reference, in this case, only used it for the knee muscles. (and of course, the costumes). I kinda wish widget wasn't in the shot as it made a serious, somber scene a tad bit goofie. still works I guess.

I'm starting to question if doing these covers are worth it. takes longer than I'm used to.

work in progress shots here:

I love this piece! I really loved Excalibur so I wish this was the cover to the first issue of a new Excalibur series, only this time I'd call it "X-Caliber." This team would be Wolverine, Deadpool, Fantomex, Psylocke, Nightcrawler, Shadowcat (& Lockheed), Marvel Girl, Meggan, Captain Britain, and Widget (I like the goofy, floating frog face.).

I like big teams, so I'd probably also include Pete Wisdom, Chamber, Jubilee, X-23, Domino, Warpath, Wolfsbane or Hepzibah, Colossus, and either Magik or Pixie (She is Welsh after all.).

I suppose that's stealing too many characters from "Team Cyclopes." Maybe "X-Caliber" could be the name of an Uncanny X-Force / X-Men mini-series. Or if I had to limit X-Caliber to people already on "Team Logan," I'd probably use Rogue, Gambit, Frenzy, Cannonball, Karma, Iceman, Beast, Angel, and Warbird. Maybe even replace Captain Britain and Meggan with Chamber and Husk or Cecelia Reyes and Northstar.

I hope you decide to keep doing the covers for Uncanny X-Force. I really love them. I wish you were drawing the interiors as well.

Being a huge fan of Alan Davis and Excalibur, I love seeing these particular characters together. You've rendered them beautifully. And I'd have to respectfully disagree with you about Widget. I agree, her expression can seem misleading, but that's what made the character both comedic and creepy. I didn't expect to see her at all, so when I saw her on the cover I got kind of giddy, like the moment was even more special because of the nod to a long overlooked continuity. I think it adds a bit of mystery... something look forward to. Wonderful stuff

I love this series but why does Psylocke's outfit change in every issue? She doesn't look like she can kick much butt in that outfit.

Its funny that you should mention knee muscles. I remember seeing your artwork in x-men or uncanny x-men back in the 90's during the Joseph saga thinking, I love this dudes art but whats up with the way he draws knees?? I suppose if that was the only basic complaint I had of your art...

The thing about the covers, which I understand because they take longer on my end as well. But I like them because they push me and they are a one off. Also I slowly start bringing that stuff into the interiors if I think something works.

Thought you did a great job on the cover and felt like you were pushing it.

Best
Dean

Your art has grow in leaps and bounds the past few years and this piece is no exception-- it looks absolutely phenomenal! I can certainly understand not wanting to eat up all your "life time" with your "job time" but, just from an artistic standpoint, that's simply the price one pays for continually pushing and nurturing their abilities-- as you obviously have been doing.

I would never do anything less than encourage you to keep doing so with covers like this, even if only for the purely selfish reason of really enjoying your art and being really excited where you go with it next!

I believe that you're on your way to being one of those all-time great comic artist that leave a lasting impression on the industry that lives on forever... and the sky is the limit. You certainly have the talents and the abilities-- just keep going and we'll all keep watching.

A couple questions: What did you use for the white highlights, such as on Nightcrawler's wrist? What version grey copics did you use? Neutral grey? Toner grey?

I like this new style of yours.

I'm starting to question if doing these covers are worth it. takes longer than I'm used to. Just remember why you wanted to be a comic artist in the first place when you ask questions like that.
